Ayurveda is one of the oldest holistic healing systems developed more than 3000 years ago in India. According to Ayurveda, our health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda is considered the science of life, as 'Ayur' means life, and 'Veda' means science or knowledge. Energy plays an important role in our lives. We need energy and much zest in order to lead a healthy and happy life. Everyone and everything in this world is composed of energy which comprises the five elements: air, fire, water, earth, and space. These universal energies are present in our system as these three doshas (Tridosha) or personalities are named Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
- Vata Dosha - This Dosha is related to air and space
- Pitta Dosha - This one is related to fire and water
- Kapha Dosha - This is related to earth and water
What is Vata Dosha?
Vata Dosha contains two elements air and space which is the most important dosha because it regulates all the movements. Moving your legs, arms, breathing, blinking our eyes, eliminating waste products from the body, all these things happen due to this dosha. When the balance in Vata Dosha is disturbed then we are very prone to stress and anxiety.
Representative of Vata
Representative of Vata means those who have predominant Vata Dosha and having more qualities of Vata. They are described as slim, can multitask, energetic, flexible, creative individuals, forgetful, have frequent mood swings influenced by the weather as well as food, poor circulation, irregular appetite, and eating patterns.
What is Pitta Dosha?
Pitta Dosha consists of two elements: fire and water. It is the energy within you that digests food and emotions. It is through pitta that you perceive what is happening in your surroundings. For example, when you hear a loud sound, it is a pitta which clears whether it is a sound that originated from the falling of a heavy thing or thunder.
Representative of Pitta
People with Pitta are said to have a muscular build, are athletic and goal-oriented. Their aggression can take over sometimes which often leads to conflicts. They are intelligent, quick learners, have warm skin, are sharp, determined, have on point leadership skills, clear voices, and strong eyesight. Whereas they struggle to remain patient, get into conflict easily, are sensitive to hot weather, are always hungry, and are prone to acne and inflammation.
What is Kapha Dosha?
Kapha Dosha is based on two elements earth and water. Kapha is considered as the protector. It's the fluid in the joints that prevents us from all the shock our body would be receiving.
Representative of Kapha
People with Kapha Dosha are broadly framed, have strong bones, physically and mentally strong, smooth and cool skin, are wise and mature, patient, calm, and composed. Whereas they also have a slow metabolism, are over sleepers, are prone to respiratory issues, need regular motivation, and else get depressed.
The three main types of bodies in Ayurveda have specific strengths and weaknesses that define the individual. The health of the individual depends on the predominant Dosha. Apart from the three ayurvedic body types described, the other body types can be Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Vata, Pitta-Kapha, Kapha-Pitta, etc. The combination occurs when more than one Dosha is dominant. The qualities of body type in Ayurveda are also a combination of two different types.
One more body type is the Tridoshic type where all the three Doshas are in perfect balance. A tridoshic type person has an equal balance of the three Doshas. Such a person is steady and usually in perfect health. The forces of the three Doshas balance each other contributing to overall good health.
